Frank and Mary ~1920's
Frank was the 8th and youngest child born in 1870 to Charles Sr. and Mary Anna (Heilman) Burkhardt. Frank married Mary Gertrude Lucas in 1896. Mary was the daughter and 7th child of Sebastian & Margaret (Deimling) Lucas.
According to the book 'Grandma's Story' by daughter Ethel (Burkhardt) Pilzecker, Frank was a certified mail order veterinarian and was called upon by local farmers to help with their livestock. He earned the nickname 'Doc' from this. Charles Sr. kept Frank on the farm by allowing him to study with some of the finest musicians in the area. He became a classical violinist and fiddle player with a great love for music. Eventually, with his children learning instruments, he had the Burkhardt family band - playing for local get-togethers and square dances! Frank's interest was always more on making music than farming so Mary handled most of the farm management. But she did love his music!
Frank ended up with the family farm on McCutchenville Rd. (SR199) south of Perrysburg, Ohio and the farm is still in the family. Frank passed in 1952 and Mary passed in 1959. They were blessed with 8 children:

John J was the 8th child of 11 of Sebastian & Margaret (Deimling) Lucas. Emma was the oldest child of 13 born to John C and Mary A (Sattler) Burkhardt. John J married Emma Mary Burkhardt in 1904 at St. Rose Church in Perrysburg, Ohio. They bought a farm in LeMoyne, Ohio on US20 just East of town on the South side of the road. As of 2021 the house is still there but the main barn close to the road is gone. John & Emma were blessed with 3 children:
When Lawrence was a newborn, Emma was having trouble producing enough milk and things were looking grim. A trip was made to Toledo to fetch Grandma Burkhardt (Mary A Sattler). She took one look at Lawrence and said "This child is hungry! You need to feed him!" She recommended Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk in a can. The Eagle Brand milk saved the day and Lawrence made a quick recovery. One hundred years later this story is still relived when we make homemade ice cream with that famous Eagle Brand milk.
Mary w/children and grandchildren ~1915
After John C Burkhardt's death in 1909, Mary probably finished raising their children on her own. In 1926 at the age of 61, she met and married Sherman Tecumseh Yeoman (b.1865). Sherman, originally from Washington Court House, Ohio, had made his way to Toledo. Records show they were married in Toledo, Ohio on June 28, 1926. Lawrence A Lucas would tell me the story about Sherman Yeoman and how him and Mary got married but Sherman was not happy with the way that Mary was coddling her grown son, Tony (Anthony A Burkhardt). Tony was still living at home and would not hold down a regular job. The story is - Sherman got fed up and left.
Digging deeper into Sherman's past, we find that he was married twice before he met Mary. After their divorce, he married again and that wife outlived him. Sherman passed away in 1949 and is buried in a cemetery in Washington Court House. According to Mary's obituary, she apparently went back to the Burkhardt name and Sherman Yeoman was not mentioned.
Sherman's 4 marriages:
Many thanks to Laurie (Cope) Galfond for some quick research and helping me put this story together. John R Lucas - May 2021
The 1920's saw 21 weddings in our family tree. To name a few; Edna Lucas to Henry Wohlert in 1921, Louise Grabenstetter to Francis Kirk in 1926, Lillian Burkhardt and Casper 'Cap' Snyder in 1924, and Rosella G Burkhardt to Lawrence Stump also in 1924. Sadly, Rosella passed away within 2 years with TB at the age of 19.
